The Bath Water District (BWD) is proud to introduce the “Hydro Hooligans,” our dedicated team participating in their first Maine Water Utilities Association (MWUA) Pipe Tapping Competition! This event showcases the speed, precision, and teamwork required to complete a task that is vital to water utility operations: tapping into a pressurized water main.
What is Pipe Tapping? Pipe tapping is a process used to create a connection to a live water main without disrupting service to customers. It involves carefully drilling into the pipe and inserting a tap to allow for a new service line. This technical skill is critical for expanding water systems, addressing emergency repairs, and maintaining reliable service in real-world utility work.
The Competition: In the Pipe Tapping Competition, teams race against the clock to perform a mock live tap on a specially prepared section of water main. Precision and adherence to safety standards are essential, as judges assess not only speed but also technique and craftsmanship. It’s a thrilling spectacle of skill and strategy that highlights the expertise required in the water industry.
The Hydro Hooligans bring energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism to every competition, embodying the dedication BWD demonstrates in serving our community. Their participation in the MWUA event reinforces the importance of technical proficiency, teamwork, and continuous improvement in delivering safe and reliable water to the customers of BWD.
