Service Line Material Inventory Program

Bath Water District Needs Your Help!

To comply with the US EPA Lead and Copper Rule change, BWD is required to inventory the pipe material of both the District-owned segment and Customer-owned segment of BWD’s 3,775+ Service Lines.

To date, BWD have inventoried 90% of the Customer-owned Service Line Materials. If you are one of the remaining 375 customers who have not submitted your Customer-owned Service Line Material survey, please do so ASAP.

What is a Service Line?

A service line is the pipe that runs underground from the water main in the street directly to your home. The service line ownership is split: The District owns and maintains the segment of the pipe between the water main in the street to the shutoff valve at the property line. From there, the Customer owns and is responsible for the pipes between the home and the property line, and inside the home.

Service lines in BWD are primarily copper, plastic, or galvanized. We have never found a lead service line, and do not expect to.

What BWD has been doing:

  • Actively reviewing public records and district records
  • Collecting customer surveys/photos online and via email
  • Door-to-door outreach
  • In-person Service Line Material inspections
  • Data collection during routine maintenance activities
  • Service line vacuum excavations

Here is how you can help:
